Never do these 3 after food !!!!!!!!

In our day to day life we do lots of mistakes related to our food habits, lifestyle; even our ignorance may cause us the diseases. Most of us may be unaware about some practices which are of less importance in our busy schedule. Actually they may look silly or simple but their long time effect is very horrible.
Let me start with a small story. One of my patient Sanket aged 7 used to have problem of indigestion. I treated him lots of time and all the time he was cured by the treatment. But after some day the same problem use to reoccur. Her mother was my blog reader. I thought  the problem is due to food, so I treated Sanket every-time only on the basis of his symptoms. I never went deep into his daily lifestyle. When this problem not curbed after repeated medication I thought of having his complete lifestyle history. Then I found that he is having an habit of bathing after food.
So Today my topic is on "Don't practice these 3 after food!".
1. Bath -
You shouldn't have bath just after having food. The bath after food will alter your digestive process and it may turn into a permanent digestive problem. Naturally bath increases your digestive power but if you have bath after food it will hamper the digestion. It is better to have early morning bath without having anything. If you are a housewife then surely you don't get the time in the morning hours and you plan to have bath  in the afternoons. So at  least  3 to 4 hours gap have to be given after food to take bath. In this gap your break fast will be digested completely and the bath will not cause any disease rather increase your digestive capacity.
2. Sleep -
Sleeping after breakfast & lunch is not advisable for you. This is the major cause for your Diabetes, Fat deposition and obesity problems. Ayurveda science says Sleep after breakfast & lunch will close all the channels of your body.  These channels are helpful to carry digested food material to respective tissue and help to convert them into a particular tissue. Due to closed channels the food will not able to reach to their respective tissues to build them. But the digested or semi digested food will totally convert to fat and it will again close your channels by atherosclerosis. If it is continued for long time the above disease will attack for sure. Naturally we go to sleep in the night after dinner. Even in the night there should be a gap of at least 2 hours after dinner.
3. Exercise -
Exercise after food certainly leads to serious health issues. Exercise includes playing outdoor games like Cricket, Football etc are also not good. Even it includes journey over car, two wheeler is not good. When you consume food our digestive system starts digestion. Exercise or playing outdoor games will disturb your digestion. So sitting in a calm place for half to one hour is the right thing for you. If you don't have that much time to spend then at least sit in a place for 15 min. and have a relaxed mind.
If you avoid these after having food will help you to keep your health balanced. You can use your precious time for some productive purposes and can benefit a lot.
If you find any difficulty or would like to express some of your thoughts please feel free to write back to me through my comment section. You can also share your problems or success stories etc. I will be very much happy and surely answer all of your queries with utmost importance.

Food intake - How many times in a day?

Sahana, 6th standard girl came with her mother Shashi for consultation. Sahana was suffering from pricking pain around the umbilicus and irregular bowel (passing stool) movements. First 2 months some how they managed with medicines prescribed by the doctors.  But when the medicine course end, she was feeling good for a week and again the same problem reoccurred. She managed to get the medicine again but after some days the same saga continued.

Sahana's mother Shashi was a working women, but very particular about food. So she use to give fresh food, good quality food and she was well educated about the food items and their properties. She use to give only those foods which are good for them, the food items which are accustomed to their culture and habitat. I could not find out any mistakes in her families food habit. Shashi wants to know what is the actual cause behind Sahana's problem. She wanted permanent cure and precautionary measures in future.

I went on to ask some questions about food timings and their I found some missing links and got the root cause. That one inspired me to write this blog post. Not only healthy food is important but intake of food is also important will be the conclusion.

Food intake timing of Sahana
6.00 AM - Get up from bed
6.00 - 6.30 AM - Brush, Toilet and Bath
6.30 - 7.30 AM - Break Fast and go to school
                             - Break Fast will be Idli, Dosa, Upma, Chapati etc which is very small
in quantity and one glass of hot milk.
10.00 - 10.30 AM - Snacks break at school
                              - Fruits like Apple, Banana, Orange etc
1.30 - 2.00 PM - Lunch time, Same food what she eats for break fast
4.00 -4.30 PM - Full meals, Rice, Sambar, Curry etc.
8.00 - 8.30 PM - Full Meals

Problems found in Sahana's Diet
1. Her total intake of food in a day was 5 times.
2. After 4.00 PM she takes 2 full meals which were heavy for her to digest.

Sahana was having food in regular interval, without knowing before taken food was digested or not? which hampered her digestion. If anyone eats something before the complete digestion of earlier food will cause indigestion. The same was in her case. She was having two meals after 4.00 PM which was too hard for her to digest.

I made some changes in her Diet
  • Morning skipped the breakfast (6.30 - 7.30 AM) and told her to have one full glass of hot milk added with 1 teaspoonful butter (salt free) and sufficient amount of sugar. If fresh home made butter is available then it is best.
  • Bath will increase the appetite naturally, so after taking bath one should have food. So I advised her to have milk with butter which is a wholesome food and provides rejuvenation to the body. Early morning intake of Milk with fresh butter will improve the intellectual power and memory power. It is said to be a good for brain development.
  • Snacks break at school (10.00 - 10.30 AM) advised her to take morning breakfast like chapati, idli etc.
  • Lunch time (1.30 - 2.00 PM) full meals with sambar and curry.
  • Skipped 4.00 - 4.30 PM full meal.
  • 7.00 - 8.00 PM full meal.

Here the main intention was to improve the digestion. Sahana should feel hungry for the next food time.

But Sahana asked me a question. "Doctor Uncle, I read in papers and heard from some elders that every 3 hours we have to take food and you say that only three times a day. Which is right?". I told her that what result you got will be the answer.

This simple change in the diet chart with some medicines for quick recovery, made her completely normal and healthy and she regularly pass stool in the morning. She doesn't have any pain in the abdomen. After 15 days I stopped all the medicines and now is happy and feeling good.

Now Sahana is educating her friends in school about the importance of food and timing of food intake. My dear friends what always hear the voice and reaction of your body not others. Your body will be the best teacher.

Please give your comments.

THYROID PROBLEM AND TREATMENT

Dear Friends, I received lots of queries to my older post THYROID PROBLEMS & AYURVEDA TREATMENT (http://pannagkamat.blogspot.in/2013/10/thyroid-problems-ayurveda-treatment.html). The queries like,
What is the line of treatment?
What should be the food for thyroid diseased patients and their Life style?
This post for them who are eagerly waiting for the solution.

Today Thyroid and hormone related diseases are becoming common in 20-30 age groups of females and some males. It is alarming and most of them go for Allopathy treatment which tries to do the management of the disease but no definite cure. Some people fed up with treatment and turn to Ayurveda, Homeopathy etc. I receive these kinds of patients more who tried other treatments and were not satisfied.

The patients who comes first for Ayurveda treatment in early stages of the disease is curable and the patient can lead a normal healthy life. But if the disease is chronic in a particular patient, the treatment will also take longer duration.

These are the major causes for the disease
1. Menstrual disorders
2. Hormonal pills, injection, postponement pills etc
3. Ineffective management of first one and half month after delivery
4. Food habits and impaired digestion

Treatment
1. The regularization of menstruation will sufficient to cure the problem. So here we give importance to menstruation. It again depend upon the cause, due to which the menstruation is impaired. Here some of the oral medicines and some procedures like "Virechana" and "Basti" will help.

2. The hormonal pills etc will ruin the normal hormonal physiology of the body and thyroid problems occur. This in turn effect the production (more or less) of thyroid hormones. The final outcome will be sudden weight gain or weight loss, hot flushes, fatigue etc. Here the treatment is to bring the normalcy in thyroid and related hormone production. The oral medicines are sufficient.

3. First one and half month of pregnancy is very important. Usually in the pregnancy (9 months) no menstrual flow. So the unwanted blood accumulates in the body. For the first 15 days after delivery there will be profuse flow of menstrual blood which clear all the stored unwanted blood. During these 15 days, some home medicines like pepper decoction, black cumin decoction will help to clean the body. If the blood is not cleared during this time the outcome will be thyroid problem and sudden weight gain. Here we conduct "Virechana" treatment to clean the body from the toxic blood.

4. Due to impaired digestion, accumulation of "Kapha" will hamper the hormonal system. This leads to disease. Here "Vamana" to remove "Kapha" will be the major treatment.

All said and done the final treatment will be planned after thorough understanding of the patient and his history. So the above treatment is for your understanding purpose and how Ayurveda deal with thyroid disease patients.

For all the above patients some of the food and lifestyle changes are very essential
1. Have healthy and fresh food
2. Hot and limited quantity of food
3. Don't eat dinner very late i.e. after 8.30 PM.
4. Avoid night Curd and butter milk.
5. Deep oil fried foods and bakery foods to be avoided.
6. Stop having evening snacks
7. Use 1 to 2 teaspoon full of ghee during lunch and dinner
8. Have oil massage bath every day morning in empty stomach
9. The fast foods like Pizza, Burger, Italian etc which are not suits us will be better to avoid.
10. Sleep early in the night, before 10-10.30 PM.

I hope your queries are attempted. If any further information please write to me in comment section. I will try to give justice to your questions with suitable answers.

Have a happy and prosperous healthy new year.

Healthy food preparation - 1

There is a beautiful wording in Ayurveda text “when food is good and healthy, there is no use of medicine and when the food is unhealthy, medicines are of no use.” This says food is a thing which produces the disease and the same may cure the disease when consumed in a right way.

In today’s blog post I want to share a food preparation which is as good as medicine or better than medicine and easy to prepare.

I begin with a small but real story. Morning at around 7 Mr. Ramesh called me from Delhi. It was a summer their and he was full of fear and anxious about his condition. He was recently transferred to Delhi and was a bachelor so use to have his food most of the time in the hotels very rarely cooks himself. The Delhi climatic condition was new to him and even food.

Ramesh said “Sir, blood is coming out with the stool and it is very much paining and burning near the anus. I need quick relief sir. I can’t bear the pain. Please help me sir.”

I asked him “Is there any Ayurveda medical shop near?”

He replied “No sir, I am new to this area and as such there are no Ayurveda medical shops.”

Now it was a real challenge for me to treat him.

I asked “Ramesh, if I tell you some food preparation, is it possible for you to prepare and eat, which will give you the relief?”

“It’s OK sir, you please tell me how to prepare.”

I replied “wait for 5 minutes; I will forward you the preparation through mail.”

Then he replied “OK sir, I will wait for the mail, Thank you”.

Now I will share the same with you. Hope you will make use of it in future.

CONSTIPATION IN CHILDREN

Madhu a mother of Aurush, came to me last week with very tensed face. Her child was 2 years old and was suffering from constipation. The child was very irregular in passing stools few days back but from last one week he had very severe problem once in 2 or 3 days he passes stools with very difficulty. Even after sensation of defecation Aurush unable to pass stool due to the severe pain and he cry during passing stools. They tried some home remedies like giving Banana etc. no improvement.

The other associated problems were bloated stomach, loss of appetite, pain in the abdomen, intestinal gas with foul smell and belching. When I did the physical examination of the body I found inflammation in the anal region which was very red and very sensitive to touch. When I started taking history I found these below as cause for the constipation.

1. Very irregular Diet
2. Biscuits and bakery foods
3. No Ghee and Oil use etc.
4. Oil fried foods like chips and lays

Then I conducted a simple treatment at my clinic. I massaged Castor oil to his lower abdomen (part below the umbilicus and above our genital organ)  and back (same area in the back of the body) for 5 minutes and gave him hot water fomentation. Immediately he got the sensation of stools and passed the stools.

(Note: Hot water fomentation - Take one big bowl of hot water and dip a cotton towel and squeeze it. Then put the same hot towel on the area where you applied the oil for 2-3 minutes with few seconds of intervals)

Then I advised them to do the same everyday in empty stomach(best time is morning).  The next step was to stop all the foods which cause constipation and told them to give him rice gruel for next two days to add 1 teaspoon of Butter or Ghee to his food. Use only hot water for drinking. Apply butter to the anal region 2-3 times a day. Within 3 days the child was in normal condition.

Here actually due to the dry food his intestine was completely dry and no ghee or butter was there in his food. The bakery foods and oily foods will cause indigestion and leads to constipation. Due to the hard stool very sensitive anal region was damaged and it was paining.

Please try and find the amazing benefits.

If you find it successful please right to me on comment space as it will benefit other blog readers and even me to educate myself.

how to get rid of pain during menstruation?

Menstruation is a natural process in fertile women. The menstruation commonly starts at the age of 14(Menarche) and ends at 45(Menopause). This is a monthly cycle in which 3-5 days bleeding per vagina will be there. 90% of these women do have one or the other problem related with the menstruation. It may be Preponement, Postponement, Pain, Heavy bleeding, Scanty bleeding, weakness, nausea, vomiting, Headache, Sleeplessness, Constipation or diarrhoea, Acidity, gaseous distention etc. Not only these physical signs and symptoms but the psychological problems like mood swing, anger, depression, anxiety, restlessness etc. In all these, “Pain” is widely affected problem. Still she bears these pains and does her job (personal, professional, social) very promptly without fail. We should salute her. This is my small gift to give her the comfort which is need of the hour.

If we ask any doctor “What is the cause behind all these problems?, “Hormonal imbalance” and the treatment starts to balance the same. Have we ever gone beyond “Hormonal imbalance”? Have we tried to find out the reason behind “Hormonal imbalance”? No. If yes very few start finding the reason behind it and I would say they become successful.

The cause can be broadly classified into

1.       Food

2.       Lifestyle

3.       Medications

Food

1.        Normally the food we eat in this too fast life is the actual cause for all these problems. The Pizza, Burger, Bakery foods, fried foods like Lays, Kurkure and the food kept in the fridge. First of all these foods are heavy for digestion so the undigested or semi-digested food block the healthy channels of the body. The blocks will hamper the easy movement of body fluids, hormones etc. The target organ will not get the adequate supply of hormone, blood and other essential chemicals for their normal functioning. These in turn cause less function or loss of function of the particular organs.

2.       The next question comes to our mind is what food we should have. Here we have to be very careful. The food which is accustomed to us like ex. Costal Karnataka people have red rice, South Karnataka people have ragi, north Karnataka Jawar etc. These foods are not only accustomed but the environment is also suits them. If those people suddenly change his/her food then the disease process starts. The pizza, burger are not our part of meal. They definitely cause the problem.

3.    Not only the food type but quantity, time, preparation method all counts. Ex: Same food (ragi balls) if kept in the fridge and used next day then it is again a poison for the body.

The food should be limited, fresh, Hot, Mixed with or prepared by adding some ghee or oil will keep the body healthy and improve the health.

4.       Frequently having food – One should not have anything before completely digesting the earlier food.

Life style

1.       Late night sleep

2.       Day time sleep

3.       After having food running or doing work or sleep

4.       Having bath after food

5.       More exercise

6.       Not taking rest during the menstruation

7.       Not following the regimen during and after pregnancy

Medications

1.       Preponement and postponement pills

2.       Induced or forceful Abortion

3.       D&C or D&E

4.       Copper T

5.       Hormonal pills

6.       Hormonal injections etc.

These will affect the normal functioning and cause the menstrual problems.

What is the remedy?

When we know the cause of the disease then it is very easy to cure. So here I have given detail explanation about the problem. Next comes how to find the relief?

1.       Take adequate rest during the menstruation.

2.       Every day have oil massage bath in empty stomach. But one should not take during the bleeding period.

3.       Go to sleep early and reduce the works which increases your physical strain.

4.       Have the hot and fresh food with sufficient amount of ghee or butter.

5.       During menstruation if pain is present then prepare 30ml decoction of Jeera (Cumin seeds) and add 1 tsp of butter and drink sip by sip.

6.       Have Jeera rice, ghee rice which is fresh during the pain.

7.       Take 1tsp of Jeera and fry it with 10-15ml of ghee in low flame and them chew the fried Jeera along with ghee. After 3-5 minutes drink 30 ml hot water.

8.       Prepare the food adding small quantity of castor oil or use castor oil for applying chapatti etc.

9.       Have very hot water during food.

These are some of the home remedies which I have suggest to my patients. They will benefit very quickly and you can feel the drastic change.

But these are not sufficient, a continuous medication is very essential for which please visit any qualified AYURVEDA DOCTOR.

GHEE AND ITS BENEFITS

For the past couple of decades people have been guided to believe that food products such as oils, ghee, cheese etc are harmful for health. Notion in general seems to be that especially ghee may prove to be life threatening by causing serious health hazards such as heart related / blood vessel related problems and complications in cholesterol levels etc. well… is it for fact or are we being obscured of the real facts?

Ghee is not a poison; it is nectar for the mankind. The correct method of preparation of ghee, storage and consumption of ghee etc if followed, it will not harm the health rather improve the health. In general, any food item if we want to consume we have to think these factors. Does that food is required for me? How much quantity will be sufficient for me? Which is the right time to have? How long we can consume the food? The same things apply even for ghee. So any food item which is taken under control it will be beneficial and if it exceeds then definitely spoil it.

Now I would like to explore the benefits of ghee
1.       The first and foremost about the ghee is it is called as “Aajanma satmya” for the Indian subcontinent people. That means it is adjusted to our body physiology and anatomy and will always do well for the body. If it is so then it should have lots of benefits. Let us explore what are those?

2.       The ghee is called as “Sahasra veerya” means it contains 1000 times strength or regular consumption will increase our strength 1000 times. It may be exaggerated but definitely it will help a lot in improving our health and immunity.

3.       Ghee improves our “Dhi” (intellectual power), “Dhruti” (using the intellectual power effectively), “Smruti” (memory power). The healthy fat contents of the ghee help in nourishing the brain tissues and soothes brain tissue.

4.       Ghee’s major benefit - it regularizes the digestion and improves the digestive fire. For abdominal discomfort, gaseous distention and constipation ghee along with hot and fresh food is a quick fix.

5.       Ghee improves the sexual power and increases the sperm count as well. It is the best aphrodisiac.

6.       Ghee also provides most of the cosmetic benefits like it glow the skin, improve the luster, slow down the aging process, and keep the skin young and wrinkle free. It provides protection to the skin from the bad rays of sun by covering skin by a thin oily layer.

7.       It is a best antibiotic and antimicrobial which removes all kinds of microorganism from the body.

8.       It is a good medicine for following diseases like emaciation, debility, sleeplessness, less sperm count, erectile dysfunction, early ejaculation, burn wounds, diseases encounter in pregnancy etc.

As the famous food writer  Michael Pollan explained, the best teacher of what’s healthy is not the food companies (because it is motivated to profit from cheap food that is often unhealthy); government (too often misguided an pulled in different directions by industry); or nutrition scientists (some admit their research techniques are flawed). The best teacher of what is good to eat is our historical culture, and as he put it, culture is a fancy word for mom and grandmother.

Now it is up to you to decide ghee is good or bad!
Please provide your valuable feedback in the comments below which will motivate me to write more on various topics.
Please wait for my next article………….
“How to prepare ghee?”

Take care.
